When do you need to opt for the procedure?

The doctor performs the procedure when the tooth’s inner part, known as the pulp, is not good. It is injured, which is why it either becomes infected or inflamed. You see that part above your gums- the crown can remain intact even if the pulp is not in the right condition. Thus, to preserve the tooth’s structure, it is imperative to get rid of inflamed or infected teeth.

Reasons for the damage of pulp consist of the following:

  1. A crack in the tooth
  2. Numerous dental procedures on the same tooth
  3. Decay because of a cavity which is left untreated
  4. An injury in the tooth
  5. Swelling
  6. Sensation

These are some of the reasons why you may need to opt for the procedure. Just discuss your problem with the dentist, and he/she will let you know whether you have to opt for it. If you have some issues in the front teeth, the doctor will probably ask you to opt for the root canal front teeth procedure. What your doctor will do is he will examine the tooth and take X-rays to find out the root cause. Accordingly, he/she will get started with the treatment.

How is the procedure performed?

The entire procedure happens in a dental office. When you visit the medical setting, someone from the staff will take you to the treatment room and guide you. The procedure will take place like:

  1. Anesthetic: Once the dentist is ready to perform the procedure, you will see that he/she will place a small amount of medication on your gum. This is done so that you do not feel the pain. The doctor will use a local anesthetic. You may feel a sharp pinch, but you need not worry because this will pass in no time. During the whole procedure, you will remain awake, but you won’t feel the pain.
  1. Get rid of the pulp: Once your tooth is numb, the doctor will make a little opening at the top of the infected tooth. As soon as the doctor exposes the pulp which is damaged, he/she will remove it. To remove it, the doctor will use special tools.
  1. Antibiotics: Once the pulp has been removed, the doctor will make sure that the area is coated with an antibiotic. The same is done to ensure that the infection is gone, and it can be avoided in the future. Once the doctor cleans the canals which are infected, he/she will fill and seal the tooth. There may be chances that they may also prescribe you oral antibiotics.
  1. Temporary filling: The dentist will end the procedure by making some temporary filling so that the saliva does not damage it.
