Ayat

Al Kursi, Arabic for the ‘Throne Verse’, is the 255thverse of Surah Al Baqarah, the second and the longest chapter of the Holy Quran. It is anextremely important passage, and the benefits and virtues of its recitation have been reported in several sahih hadith (authentic prophetic narrations). It is because of this reason that many Muslim families adorn their homes with an Ayat Al Kursiwall art stickers or canvas prints or an Ayat Al Kursi wall frame, in which the verse is displayed in a calligraphic font.

Mentioned below are the sahih hadith that state the benefits and virtues of reciting the Ayat Al Kursi:

  • Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Everything has its pinnacle, and the pinnacle of the Qur’an is Surah al-Baqarah. In it is an ayatwhich is the greatest ayatof the Qur’an: Ayat al-Kursi.” [Tirmidhi]
  • Narrated Abu Huraira: Prophet Muhammad (SAW) ordered me to guard the Zakat revenue of Ramadan. Then somebody came to me and started stealing of the foodstuff. I caught him and said, “I will take you to Allah’s Apostle!” Then Abu Huraira described the whole narration and said: That person said (to me), “Please don’t take me to Allah’s Apostle and I will tell you a few words by which Allah will benefit you. When you go to your bed, recite AyatulKursi, (2.255) for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long, and Satan will not be able to come near you till dawn.” When the Prophet heard the story he said (to me), “He (who came to you at night) told you the truth although he is a liar; and it was Satan.”( Sahih Al-Bukhari – Book 61 Hadith 530)
  • Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA): Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “If anyone recites in the morning Ha-Mim al-Mu’min to ‘to Him is the final goal, and the Throne Verse, he will be guarded by them till the evening, and if anyone recites them in the evening he will be guarded by them till the morning.” (Al-Tirmidhi – Hadith 2144 )
  • Ubayy ibn Ka’breported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked him which versein the Book of Allah was the greatest. He said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He repeated it several times, then he said, “Ayat al-Kursi.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Congratulations upon your knowledge OAbu’l-Mundhir. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, it has a tongue and two lips, and it glorifies the Sovereign (i.e., Allah) at the foot of the Throne.” This was also narrated by Muslim, without the phrase “By the One in Whose hand is my soul…”.

It is therefore lucid from the narrations listed above as to whythe Throne Verse is so significant, and why so many Muslims recite and memorise it. It is thus no surprise that many Muslims decorate their homes or offices with and Ayat Al Kursiwall frame or Ayat Al Kursi wall art decalsor canvas prints or stainless steel works.
